The process: we melted the resin in a pot on a hot plate (the charcoal fire called for in the recipe is at odds with Columbia Health and Safety regulations); we mulled the vermilion with walnut oil, which we added to the resin; then we dipped and swirled our “fantastical” thorn (quince) branch into the mixture, which hardened quickly as it cooled.
